Major Cuthbert was a member of the 14th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Udorn Air Base, Thailand. On November 23, 1968, he was the electronics systems officer of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on a photo reconnaissance mission near Dong Hoi, over North Vietnam, when the aircraft was shot down. He parachuted down but contact was lost. His remains were recovered on August 4, 1993 and identified on December 16, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
