Atmore L. Crandall was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 21, 1876. He had worked for the Providence Fire Department and later for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. He married Clara B. Mertungh from Massachusetts in 1894. They had a son, Glendow L. Crandall, in 1897. The family moved to the Isthmus of Panama on March 4. 1908 and served in the Fire Departments at Cristobal, Las Cascadas, Tabernilla and Culebra. After he retired he lived in the Canal Zone. He died on October 7, 1949 and was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery then reinterred at Corozal American Cemetery in 1979.
