First Lieutenant Cotton was a member of the 4th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Air Base, Thailand. On March 9, 1970, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4E) on an operational mission over Attopeu Province, Laos. When the aircraft was about 10 miles southeast of Chavane, it was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
