Boatswain's Mate Second Class Cooke was born in Franklin, Missouri in 1919. He married Irene Martha Cooke and lived in St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was promoted to Seaman 1st Class on June 22, 1937. On November 21, 1940, assigned to the light cruiser USS Richmond. During World War II, he was promoted to Boatswain's Mate Second Class. The USS Richmond was escorting convoys along the West Coast. He became ill and on October 3, 1942, he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Balboa, Canal Zone. He died on October 4, 1942 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
