Staff Sergeant Coleman was a rifleman with Company C, 4th Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On March 6, 1969, he was on a reconnaissance mission in Kien Hoa Province southeast of My Tho, South Vietnam. As he started to cross a bamboo bridge he believed was secure, enemy fire killed him and he fell into the stream. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
