Colonel Chestnut was a member of the 56th Special Operations Wing, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On October 13, 1970, he was the pilot of a Nomad Counter-insurgency Aircraft (T-28) on a non-combat mission 12 northwest of Louangphrabang, Louangphrabang Province, Laos when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on April 10, 1995 and identified on July 19, 1995. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
