Major Chesnutt was a member of the 47th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On September 30, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission over North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on March 20, 1985 and identified on April 8, 1995. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
