Captain Cherry was a member of the 602nd Fighter Squadron. On August 9, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a mission over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on March 11, 1997 and identified on July 15, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
