Lieutenant Commander Chapman was a member of Heavy Attack Squadron 10, Carrier Air Wing 21 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On February 18, 1969, he was the pilot of a Tanker Aircraft (KA-3B) on a refueling mission. His aircraft was running low on fuel and he tried to make it back to the CORAL SEA but the plane fell into the ocean. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
