Staff Sergeant Champion was a member of Company L, 75th Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. On April 24, 1971, he was a member of a long range reconnaissance patrol that was inserted near the A Shau Valley, South Vietnam. After contact with the enemy he was listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
