Electrician's Mate Second Class Canup was a member of Detachment A, Mine Squadron 11, U.S. Navy. On January 14, 1967, he was killed when his Mine Sweeping Boat 14 (MSB-14) was rammed and sank by a merchant ship, the MUI FINN. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
