Sergeant First Class Calhoun was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On March 27, 1968, he team leader of a strategic reconnaissance team the was operating one and a half miles south of Ta Bat in the A Shau Valley in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. When his team was attacked, he provided covering fire for his team to withdraw until he was mortally wounded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
