Staff Sergeant Butterfield was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a radar operator on a C-82A transport with the 57th Troop Carrier Squadron, 375th Troop Carrier Group stationed at Donaldson Air Force Base, South Carolina. On June 3, 1951, the plane took off from Campbell Air Force Base, Kentucky enroute to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. As it approached New Boston, Texas, it suffered structural failure of a wing and crashed, killing all eight servicemen on board.
