Captain Burns was a member of the 602nd Fighter Squadron, 14th Air Commando Wing. On August 4, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a mission 20 miles southeast of Sam Neuva, Laos when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on April 5, 1992 and identified on February 5, 1993. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
