Captain Bunker was a member of the 432nd Combat Support Group, 56th Special Operations Wing, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On December 30, 1970, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a mission on the northern edge of the plain of Jars near "Roadrunner" Lake in Laos. He flew low to get a better look at an enemy tank and his aircraft was hit with anti-aircraft fire. He managed to land safely, but was surrounded by the enemy. His remains were not recovered.
