Major Brown was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On July 17, 1972, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission 30 miles west-southwest of Hue, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
