He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 10, 1883. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 21 and rose to Sergeant in three years. He was discharged in 1908, re-enlisted in 1909 and was promoted to Corporal. He died on August 31, 1910 from head injuries at the beginning of the sixth round of a boxing match as a member of the Marine Battalion, Bluefield, Nicaragua. The bout was stopped at 8:30 p.m., August 30, 1910. He was buried at 11:30 a.m. on 7 September 1910 at Bas Obispo Cemetery, located near the town of Gamboa, Panama and transferred to Mt. Hope Cemetery on 2 May 1917 upon the closure of Bas Obispo Cemetery. He was reinterred at Corozal American Cemetery in 1979.
