Colonel Brand was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, stationed at Takhlu, Thailand. On August 17, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105F) on a search and destroy mission of surface to air missiles and antiaircraft artillery sites in North Vietnam. On leaving the target area, Colonel Brand attacked another site and his aircraft was hit. He parachuted safely to the ground but could not be located. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
