First Lieutenant Bowen was the navigator of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 90th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group. On December 27, 1952, he was on a night intruder mission when contact with his aircraft was lost. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 28, 1953. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
