Major Bogard was a member of the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 12, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a low level night reconnaissance mission along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. After refueling the aircraft, radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
