Captain Bloom was a member of the Marine Composite Squadron 1, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On November 13, 1964, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-8A) over Danang, South Vietnam, when his plane collided with another. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
