Sergeant First Class Blankschen was a decorated veteran of World War II, fighting in the European Theater. In Korea, he was a member of the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 10, 1950, while his regiment was moving to the port of Pusan, South Korea in preparation for the amphibious landing at Wonsan, North Korea, he died of other causes.
