Private First Class Berdahl was a member of Troop D, 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On January 20, 1972, he was the door gunner of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) on a recovery mission of a downed F-4 jet fighter. The aircraft was returning from its mission northwest of Khe San, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam when it was hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
