John Ernest Baxendale was born in Decatur, Illinois on February 22, 1883. He moved to Los Angeles, California. He served as a Private in the 34th Infantry for three months. He married Carolina Icaze De Baxendale in 1914. He claimed exemption from the service in World War I on the basis that he had to support a wife and two children. He moved to the Canal Zone and worked as a power switchboard operator at Gatun, Canal Zone. After retirement he and his family sailed from Panama on the "SS CRISTOBAL" to New York City in 1934. He died on November 6, 1950 and is buried at the Corozal American Cemetery near his wife, Carolina.
