Paymaster John Adams Bates, Jr. was born in the United States in 1838. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as Paymaster aboard the Sloop-of War "USS JAMESTOWN". His ship was protecting the West Coast from Confederate raiders during the Civil War. The ship was re-commissioned as a storage and hospital ship on September 3, 1866 at Panama. Paymaster Bates died while on active duty on March 4, 1867 and was honored by a monument at Ancon, which was moved to the Mt. Hope Cemetery, then to the Corozal American Cemetery at Section F, Row 11, Grave 32 in 1979.
