1LT Barnes was the pilot of a single seat P-51D escort aircraft returning from a bombing raid over Berlin when shot down by enemy aircraft. His remains were recovered from area near Carlshof, Germany. 1LT Barnes' remains have been identified. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Cambridge, England.
