Aviation Machinist's Man (Reciprocating), Third Class Barber was a member of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 23, Anti-Submarine Air Carrier Group 55 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS YORKTOWN (CVS-10). On March 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Martin Tracker Anti-Submarine Aircraft (S-2E) on a night surveillance mission over the North Vietnamese coast in bad weather. Contact with the aircraft was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
