Colonel Ayers was a member of the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam. On April 16, 1970, he was the weapons/systems officer of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) conducting a reconnaissance of the Demilitarized Zone and Savannakhet Province, Laos. Radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
