Notes

In June 2013, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency exhumed the remains of an Unknown Soldier buried in Plot E Row 10 Grave 16 at Brittany American Cemetery with the belief that an identification could be made. DNA analysis and historical evidence were used to positively identify the remains as belonging to SSgt. Gerald V. Atkinson, who served with the 358th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy, and lost his life on April 10, 1945. His family chose to have his remains interred in a private cemetery in Florida. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at Netherlands American Cemetery.
