Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class Ashby was a member of Observation Squadron 67 located at the Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On February 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Lockheed Neptune Observation Patrol Aircraft (OP-2E) on an operational mission over Laos when the starboard engine of the aircraft caught fire and the aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on March 30, 1993 and identified on December 1, 1993. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
