Colonel Ammon was a member of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On September 21, 1966, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a combat mission 22 miles northeast of Hanoi, North Vietnam in the Santay area. When he reached the target his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on August 27, 1978 and identified on September 11, 1978. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
