ABMC cemeteries to participate in European Heritage Days

Several ABMC cemeteries in Europe will take part in the upcoming European Heritage Days throughout the month of September. Heritage Days offer ABMC a unique opportunity to share with visitors the stories of the men and women commemorated overseas as well as unveiling how these hollowed grounds are maintained. Attendance is free, but registration may be required.  

 

Ardennes American Cemetery, Belgium 

Saturday 10 September, 10 a.m., 2 p.m. 

Free guided tours will be provided by the local history club Mémoire de Neupré. 

 

Brittany American Cemetery, France 

Sunday 18 September, 2 p.m. 

Our staff will guide visitors through the cemetery and the memorial. No reservations needed. 

 

Cambridge American Cemetery, England 

Saturday 10 September, 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m.*, 12 p.m., 2 p.m.*, 2:30 p.m. 

Sunday 11 September, 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2:30 p.m.

As part of Open Cambridge, three free guided tours per day will be provided by Cambridge American Cemetery staff. The historical tours “Dare-devils, Boffins and Cowboys: WWII technology in your lives today” will dive into the astounding inventions that came out of WWII, and *horticultural tours: “‘Cutting’ edge technology – the evolution of 21st Century grounds-keeping” that will guide visitors through the behind-the-scenes of maintaining the cemetery. Epinal American Cemetery, France 

Saturday 17 September, 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. 

Sunday 18 September, 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. 

Our staff will provide free guided tours focusing on the origin and the creation of the cemetery. Tours will take place in the morning and afternoon both days. Reservations are needed. To reserve, please contact our staff. 

 

Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery, France  

Saturday 17 September to Saturday 24 September, all day. 

The exhibit “First World War Aces,” will be displayed all day inside the crypt from Sept. 17 to Sept. 24 for visitors to learn more about the American aviators who fought during the Great War. The exhibit was developed in partnership with ONACVG. No reservations needed. 

 

Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, France  

Saturday 17 September, 3 p.m. 

Sunday 18 September, 10 a.m. 

Our staff will guide visitors through the cemetery on Saturday and will provide information on the memorial on Sunday. No reservations needed. 

 

Netherlands American Cemetery, Netherlands 

Sunday 18 September, 3:30 p.m. 

Due to the bad weather conditions, the Liberation Concert planned for Sept. 18, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. at Netherlands American Cemetery has been cancelled.

 

Normandy American Cemetery, France 

Saturday 17 September and Sunday 18 September 

Memory Trial program: morning and afternoon 

Thematic tours: 2:30 p.m. 

Family tours: 3 p.m. 

Our staff will offer a Memory Trail with talks throughout the day at different locations on various topics. Visitors will have the opportunity to follow all talks or pick the talks they are most interested in. Thematic guided tours will also be provided in the afternoon: one for the general public, and one with a focus on families with young children. Please note that the family tours will only be available in French. No reservations needed. 

 

Suresnes American Cemetery, France 

Saturday 17 September to Thursday 22 September, all day. 

The exhibit “Faces of Suresnes” will display over 1,000 photographs throughout the cemetery, next to the headstones and inside the chapel in front of the Walls of the Missing, to honor the men and women who rest at Suresnes American Cemetery. No reservations needed. Guided tours available upon request by contacting our staff at Suresnes American Cemetery. 

 

St. Mihiel American Cemetery, France  

Saturday 17 September, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

Sunday 18 September, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

ABMC’s greenspace workers will meet with the public and explain how they fulfill their mission of commemoration through excellent standards of care, while adapting to new environmental challenges. Tours will take place at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. No reservations needed.
