Major Deakyne was a member of the 2nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 52nd Fighter Interceptor Group stationed at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. On August 20, 1951, he was flying a T-33A Shooting Star fighter. Shortly after takeoff from McGuire, the aircraft burst into flames and crashed into a group of trees about 1 mile south, killing him and his co-pilot. The wing tank exploded and set an Army 2-1/2 ton truck afire killing eleven servicemen in the process of loading the truck. |
