USMA Class of 1946, Captain Doyle was the pilot of a F-80C Shooting Star fighter interceptor with the 7th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter Bomber Group. On November 5, 1950, while on a combat mission, he was testing an external fuel tanks. As he fired rockets on enemy positions, the tanks fell off causing his aircraft to crash and explode. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
