Major Sumner was a member of the 457th Field Artillery Battalion stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. On June 3, 1951, he was a passenger on a C-82A transport plane enroute from Campbell Air Force Base, Kentucky enroute to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. As it approached New Boston, Texas, it suffered structural failure of a wing and crashed, killing all eight servicemen on board. |
