Corporal Herrold was a bulldozer operator with Company A, 11th Engineer Combat Battalion. On March 19, 1953, while working on steep roads cut from stone mountains, Corporal Herrold decided to bring his dozer to Company A's camp for maintenance. The dozer started to slip on the ice covered rocks and he tried to stop the sliding by dropping the dozer blade. He directed the mechanic accompanying him to jump for safety. Then, when he himself tried to jump, it rolled over carrying him down the mountain to his death. |
