Colonel Wrye was a member of the Headquarters, 7th Air Force on temporary duty to the 20th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On August 12, 1966, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Voodoo Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-101C) on a mission 5 miles east of Nam Dinh, Nam Ha Province, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on February 7, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
