Captain Wilkinson was a member of the 2nd Squad, Troop C, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On February 12, 1971, he was the aircraft commander of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) on an armed reconnaissance mission west of Quang Tri, South Vietnam, when his aircraft developed engine trouble. Before it could land the aircraft exploded and crashed. His remains were recovered on July 28, 1997 and identified on August 6, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
