Captain Taylor was a member of Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On July 15, 1971, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1B) on a combat mission to "Red Devil Road" in South Vietnam when the aircraft developed engine trouble. he successfully autogyrated into the Quang Tri River. He left the cabin and got on the tail section awaiting rescue. He was pulled off the rescue helicopter's skid into the raging river. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
