Colonel Stine was a member of the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam. On September 27, 1966, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on a night photographic mission 5 miles north of the Demilitarized Zone, North Vietnam when radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
