Captain Stacks was a member of Command and Control North, 5th Special Forces Group. On November 30, 1968, he was a passenger in a Sikorsky Choctaw Cargo Helicopter (CH34) en-route to their reconnaissance mission area in Laos, when a 37mm anti-aircraft fire hit the helicopter and it crashed 10 miles northwest of Khe San, just into Laos east of Tchepone. His remains were recovered on March 26, 1989 and identified on February 1, 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
