Captain Spengler was a member of Battery F, 79th Artillery Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. On April 5, 1972, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) attacking an enemy force near Loc Ninh, Vinh Long Province, South Vietnam. After its second run, it was hit by ground fire, crashed, burst into flames and exploded. His remains were recovered on April 27, 1989 and identified on August 16, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
