Colonel Pyles was a member of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On October 18, 1965, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a reconnaissance over South Vietnam when bad weather caused it to crash into a mountain near Danang, South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on April 8, 1993 and identified on May 21, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
