Sergeant Pietrzak was a member of Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On February 10, 1971, he was an observer in a Hughes Cayuse Observation Helicopter on a visual reconnaissance mission in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam when the aircraft was hit by machine gun fire, burst into flames, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on June 7, 1994 and identified on.March 16, 2004 His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
