Lieutenant Colonel McIntire was a member of the 17th Wild Weasel Squadron. On December 10, 1971, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105G) on a mission over Mu Gia Pass, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile. He ejected but did not make it safely to the ground. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
