Lieutenant Colonel Lyon was a member of the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam. On March 22, 1968, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission to destroy an enemy gun on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Laos. As his aircraft passed Aideo Pass through the mountains, it was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
