Colonel Luna was a member of the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 10, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a combat mission over Route 9112/9116 road junction, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire. He parachuted safely to the ground, but radio contact was lost about an hour afterwards. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
