First Lieutenant Lilly was a member of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 17, 1971, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) visual reconnaissance in the Snoul District of Kracheh Province near Seang, Cambodia. Enemy fire forced the aircraft to the ground. First Lieutenant Lilly was killed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
