Major Lillund was a member of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On October 4, 1967, he was the bombardier/navigator of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105F) on a bombing mission 10 miles northwest of Phu Tho, Vinh Phu Province, North Vietnam, when radio contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
