Specialist, Fourth Class Lawson was a member of Detachment B-36, Company A, 5th Special Forces Group. On April 9, 1969, while guarding a portion of the camp perimeter in Phuoc Long Province, South Vietnam, he was struck and killed by shrapnel from an American 175mm artillery shell which fell short of its target. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
